Starting to write a book can feel overwhelming, but AI has become an incredible writing companion that can help bring your ideas to life. The first crucial step?

STEP 1: Choose the right AI model for YOUR writing style and needs.

The Main Players:
  • ChatGPT (OpenAI) - Great for brainstorming and general writing tasks
  • Claude (Anthropic) - Excellent for nuanced, conversational writing
  • Gemini (Google) - Strong research capabilities and factual content
  • Perplexity - Fantastic for basic searches (like a Google replacement)

My Personal Experience: After testing several models, I've found Claude to be my go-to writing partner. What sets Claude apart for me is its ability to adapt to my voice and writing style in a way that feels natural and authentic. It doesn't just generate text - it seems to understand the nuance and tone I'm going for, making the collaboration feel genuinely collaborative rather than robotic.

Access Options: You can use these through web interfaces (like ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro) or APIs if you're more technical. For most authors, the web versions work perfectly and are user-friendly. I honestly had NO issues using the web interfaces. I DO subscribe to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. I would say you are better if you do to. You can try writing a book using the free accounts, but I think you need to be prepared to go slower if you reach your limits.
Remember: The "best" AI is the one that meshes with YOUR writing style. Try a few conversations with different models to see which one feels right. Experiment! It was only by me trying out various models that I realized that Claude was the one that worked best for me. By the way, if I was writing something technical I think ChatGPT would be better. For conversational non-fiction or even fiction, I think Claude is better.
This is just the beginning of my process! I'll be sharing more parts of my AI book-writing journey, including setting realistic expectations, research strategies, and the actual writing process.
